This is the brain game that everyone knows.  Voted one the best 25 toys of the last twenty five years and approved by Mensa, it deserves to be so well known.  Personally I find it infuriatingly difficult, so much so that when demonstrating it, I have had to memorise how to do one of the easier challenges and then hope that no one asks me to show them how to do any of the other challenges.

You set the board up as detailed in one of the 40 challenge cards.  Then you have to slide the other vehicles out of the way so that your little red car can escape.

Everyone knows how to play the game mastermind. The Codemaker sets a four colour code and the Codebreaker has ten rows in which to crack it.

Single person brain teaser game for pre-school children.

Based on the story of the Wolf and the Seven Goats, you have to work out where to put the pieces on the board so that all the goats are safely hidden from the wolf.

48 challenges.  The first ones are straightforward but the final ones will cause a fair bit of chin-scratching in many adults.

Age suitability: 3-7 years old.

Challenging brain game for intelligent children aged ten years and up.

Our cube-shaped Viking hero is locked in a dungeon.  You have to roll him around the board, picking up the key and avoiding the obstacles before he can escape.

Single person brain teaser game for children age 7 and upwards (and shop-keepers when it's quiet in the shop).

Build an agility course by placing the obstacles around the board to enable the dog to get back to its trainer.

Comes on a board about 15cm across with a lid, so makes a great travel game.

60 challenges, start easy and get harder and harder.

Brain game for children age five and above in which you have to work out where to put which bird where.

There are 60 different challenges which get progressively harder and harder. In each challege you are given a few clues and then you have to work out where the remaining birds go.

Age suitability: 5 years and upwards.

Excellent logic game in which you build a marble run in such a way that the marbles end up exactly where the challenge says they should.

The booklet contains 80 challenges that get progressively harder as you move from Starter level through to Master level.

Age suitability: 8 years to adult.

Layer up the tiles so that the final result matches the picture in the challenge book

Single player brain teaser game for children aged 5 onwards.  There is a booklet with 100 different challenges.  The early ones are relatively straightforward but the harder ones will stretch many an adult.

Single person brain game for children aged 4 to 7 with 48 challenges of varying difficulty.

Put Little Red Riding Hood, Grandma's House and the three trees on the board and then place the path pieces so that Little Red Riding Hood can get to the house.  In the harder puzzles, the wolf comes in and needs his own path to the house.

Follow the clues to find the red diamond.

Single person brain game with 80 challenges.  You will be told where some of the gems lie and then, with the help of a clue or two from the challenge booklet, you have to work out where the remainder go.

Age suitability: 8 years upwards.

Single person brain teaser game for children age 7 and upwards.

Choose one of the eighty challenges.  They start easy but get harder and harder as you work through the book.

You'll be told the outcome of the battle between the two pirate ships and the 4 navy ships, which side ends up being sunk and which victorious. Place the two rock pieces where indicated on the board and then work out where to place all the ships.  Each ship has canons on both sides, so if you place them side by side, both ships sink.  If you place them side on, just one will sink.

Cat Crimes is a single player brain game in which you have to identify which of the six cats committed the crime. So choose a challenge card, put the crime token on the board and then using the clues on the card work out where each of the cats were sitting.  The one sitting opposite the token is the culprit.

Age suitability: 8 years+

Single person brain teaser for anyone aged between 7 and 99.

Described as the ultimate solitaire; place the four magnetic base plates together to form your playing board and then try to position the twelve coloured pieces.  It's not always too easy.  There is a booklet with 60 challenges to get you going but any number of different challeges are possible.  Good luck.
